Cyanotype Artwork
Rooted in the quiet beauty of the natural world, each cyanotype is an original botanical composition, thoughtfully created by hand from beginning to end.
I carefully plant, grow, pick, and press the flowers that are included in every composition allowing each piece to carry a deeply personal connection to the seasons, landscapes, and people I am experiencing nature with. The botanicals, fruits, and feathers are transformed into classic Prussian blue and white compositions that lean into the 2D nature of alternative photographic processes. My work explores the delicate balance between botanical form and negative space, playing on the tiny details and overall patterned composition.
Nature invites us to slow down, savor the beauty, and enjoy the gifts of each season. Cyanotype allows us to hold on a little tighter to the fleeting memories that would otherwise fade away.
The Process
Each piece begins with flowers that are carefully grown, hand-picked, and pressed in a traditional flower press to preserve their natural forms. Green cyanotype medium is painted onto the fine art paper. Each flower is delicately placed and designed into a unique composition and then the artwork is exposed to sunlight. The chemical reaction of the exposure leaves behind the silhouettes of each flower’s natural details. The paper is then rinsed to stop exposure, and the print is dried. The result is a beautiful and unique piece of archival blue and white botanical artwork that will last generations.
